This time around, the Walmart Photos packaging improved over my last test in 2020, when the 8-by-10s were loose in the main envelope. Walmart's shipping package is equivalent to what Shutterfly and Snapfish offer, and better than the thin paper envelope Target Photos uses. Though Walmart's packaging isn’t as protective as Mpix, Nations Photo Lab, or Printique’s sturdy cardboard boxes for the same order, it’s perfectly acceptable. Packaging comparison clockwise from top left: Nations Photo Labs, Printique, Mpix, Target Photo, Snapfish, Walmart Photo, Amazon Photos. You can get same-day local pickup service on some holiday cards. Walmart also offers premium options like foil-printing and linen stock. Single-sided 5-by-7-inch postcard-style cards start at just 48 cents apiece, and you can get folding 5-by-7-inch cards for $1.42 even for a quantity of one-most services require higher volumes to get lower prices. It's a large and growing selection that now matches Shutterfly in letting you adorn shower curtains and neckties with your pictures.įor photo-embellished greeting cards, Walmart has lower pricing than any of its competitors. In addition to calendars, mugs, and photo books, you can choose blankets, phone cases, puzzles, jewelry, canvas bags, and clothing. Like Shutterfly, Walmart Photo lets you order many different types of objects on which you can print your favorite photographs. What Gifts and Cards Does Walmart Photo Offer? Read our editorial mission (Opens in a new window) & see how we test (Opens in a new window). Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. Larger prints are also a bargain: 5-by-7s cost just 68 cents (beating Amazon and Snapfish by one penny), and 8-by-10s cost just $1.94 each-that’s from 12 cents to over a dollar cheaper than any competitor. Amazon Photos is close at 17 cents and Shutterfly at 18 cents. For mail orders, there's only one company that charges less than Walmart Photo for 4-by-6 prints (12 cents at Walmart), and that's Snapfish, which charges only 9 cents per print. (That last option is for orders processed at a central facility and mailed to the store.) For comparison, CVS Photo and Walgreens Photo (Opens in a new window) charge 39 and 37 cents for one-hour photos that you pick up at their stores, respectively. For the best prints among all services we tested, meanwhile, Nations Photo Labs comes out on top.Ī 4-by-6-inch photo from Walmart costs just 12 cents, and you have three delivery options: one-hour store pickup, home delivery, and site-to-store. But our test prints from Walmart weren’t as sharp as those from CVS Photo, our Editors’ Choice winner for local pickup, or from Snapfish, our Editors’ Choice for budget-friendly services. It has the cheapest rates of any in-store printing service we've tested, and it’s among the least expensive options for mailed photos. Walmart is known for offering products at lower prices than you can find elsewhere, and the chain's photo printing service is no exception. announced that its entire slate of 2021 films-including Dune-would premiere on its streaming service, HBO Max, the same day they hit theaters. This is their chance to have that feeling again, and there’s no way they can have it at home. Then Covid-19 happened, theaters shuttered, and what was supposed to be 2020’s most anticipated film became 2021’s most anticipated film. He knows half the world saw Avatar, and he knows they’ve seen nothing like it since. (With all its variations, The Way of Water is reportedly releasing in more formats than any film before it.) But while the tech is complex, the pitch is very simple. He’s bringing every technical resource available to bear on the challenge of getting audiences to turn out, from 3D, to IMAX, to high frame rate. Cruise proved his point triumphantly this year with the nostalgia, clean storytelling, and practical spectacle of Top Gun: Maverick. For him - as for Nolan and producer-stars like Tom Cruise - this is about more than just about putting assess in seats to recoup the budget it’s an article of faith. Like any filmmaker working outside the major IP factories, Cameron faces a fight to overcome the “I’ll just watch it at home” culture and get people into theaters. That sounds like a lovely place to lose yourself for a few hours in the dark. When was the last time a film took you somewhere purely amazing and beautiful? In the trailer, Avatar: The Way of Water looks for all the world like an immersive natural-history documentary about an alien world. Marvel movies, meanwhile, tend to be more focused on the characters than their often indistinct backdrops. These days, visual grandeur usually comes in more spartan and dystopian forms: the arid wastes of Dune, the dank miserablism of The Batman, the coolly desaturated hyperrealism of Christopher Nolan’s films. With Avatar: The Way of Water, he’s leaning into a pure and typically unfashionable utopianism. But I remember vividly the feeling of watching it, and it’s this feeling that the new trailer is tapping directly into.Ĭameron is one of cinema’s great populists, with an unerring intuition about what audiences want to see. It’s true that, 13 years on, I can’t really remember what happens in it. It’s a running joke that Avatar, the most successful film of all time at the global box office, leaves no cultural footprint. Although it premiered on Good Morning America and online on Wednesday, this is a trailer that has been built to be seen in theaters - which pretty much the entire moviegoing public will soon be doing as they sit down to watch Black Panther: Wakanda Forever next week. Instead, it foregrounds majestic, sweeping imagery, and bathes the viewer in Avatar’s unmistakably intense sapphire-and-emerald color palette, which is far brighter than anything else in modern cinema (outside animation, at any rate). The trailer is not even heavy on action, although there are a few thrillingly dynamic shots. In stark contrast, Cameron’s approach is almost purely vibes-based. If you are paying attention, you can spot that Jake’s daughter Kiri (played, astonishingly, by septuagenarian screen legend Sigourney Weaver) gets a good deal of focus, and that there’s some kind of teen-romance subplot, as well as some tension between different Na’vi clans and some war-with-humans stuff.ĭespite running a full two-and-a-half minutes, the Avatar: The Way of Water trailer is even more stripped back than most early teasers - and it runs strongly against the grain of modern blockbuster marketing, which loves to build out plot and motivation, preview narrative and comedy beats, and drop lore Easter eggs for fans to pore over. According to Disney and 20th Century Studios, the film “begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.” Wouldn’t you like to go back?ĭespite the fact that the movie has been in development for eons - and that Cameron assembled a writer’s room to draft the storylines for this and no less than three additional Avatar sequels - The Way of Water still has an extremely vague logline. The latest trailer does not tease “the saga continues.” There’s no mention of “the Na’vi are back.” There’s just a simple appeal: Remember that amazing place we took you to 13 years ago. “Return to Pandora.” This, in all its simplicity, is the sell for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. She is given the ability to think for herself and gets just as sassy as that droid, who was portrayed so well by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. However, J-6 has a personality that reminded me more like 元-37 from Solo. J-6 looks to be of a similar make and model as ME-8D9, which is an ancient assassin droid that found her way into Maz Kanata's Castle and was tasked with enforcing Maz's rules in the bar. The other thing I found fun was the inclusion of the nanny droid J-6. Vernestra Rwoh wielding one here was a very fun callback. She appeared in the Marvel comics and her lightwhip was always something that looked very cool. She was eventually killed by Luke Skywalker in an act of vengeance that threw him into a state of despair. With the Jedi Order in ruin, the Republic’s only hope is a lone Jedi struggling to reconnect with the Force. The most famous wielder of a lightwhip in the old Legends stories was Lumiya, an apprentice of Darth Vader who infiltrated the Rebels to woo Luke Skywalker and later turned into a full Dark Lady of the Sith. Five years after the events from the award winning Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, the Sith Lords have hunted the Jedi to the edge of extinction and are on the verge of crushing the Old Republic. Lightwhips aren't new to Star Wars, though they do appear to be new to the current canon. There are two elements within this book that feel like hidden treasures: the lightwhip that Vernestra wields and the droid, J-6. Vernestra has to help the lost children survive the hostile environment, fend off the Nihil, and compete with a padawan turning to the dangerous comforts of the dark side. But when Imri, the Jedi padawan, begins to seek vengeance for the loss of his master, things take a turn for the worst. Only by working together will they be able to defeat the Nihil and make it back to the Jedi and tell them what they know about the new Nihil threat. If the lethal acid rain wasn't enough of a threat, the two Nihil shipwrecked on the planet with them will do the trick if given half the chance. Thanks to the villainous Nihil, things go wrong and she finds herself shepherding, Imri, a padawan who has lost his master, and two other kids on a distant planet that wants to kill them. This book opens on one of her first solo missions, where she must supervise a precocious senator's daughter, the 12-year-old Avon Starros (who seems to be related to Sana Starros from our more familiar timeline). But she's still only 16 and she's doing her best to find her way in the galaxy all by herself. Though it's aimed at younger readers than the adult-oriented Light of the Jedi, people are going to find this book a lot of fun. It centers around Vernestra Rwoh, a Mirialan Jedi who, at only 16 years old, is one of the youngest Jedi in recent history to take on the trials and become a full-blown Jedi Knight. Author Justina Ireland gives us the second installment of The High Republic with the utterly delightful book Star Wars: The High Republic – A Test of Courage. So consider this a minor spoiler warning. I did find the plot rather confusing at times, but all-in-all it was worth the wait, and worth the money. This review will touch on some plot points that some readers may not want to know in advance. There is also a nifty change in the level system which raises the bar of leveling from 20 to level 50, at least. Some new twists actually encourage you to interact with your non-playable characters. The UHS shows you just the hints you need, unlike a traditional. The game is a very fun RPG, and the characters are very funny, while at the same time very helpful. Universal Hint System hints for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Another problem I had with it is that the new upgrade system is much more, and possibly too complex compared to the previous game, with up to 6 factors in upgrading certain objects. While these items are not related to any quest, they are still items that can be very useful. On the negative side, you are likely to go through the game and miss at least one thing. On the plus side, the game can randomly give you high-damage items, like weapons or armor, that are over-powerful until nearly the end. This has a good side and a very very bad side. Also, the game has an unkind tendency to do a random choose of what items are dropped by enemies, and what items are given to shops. For instance, in my experience I found that the game would freeze during the load repeatedly, an.unfavorable aspect of the game. Unfortunately, the new developer, Obsidian, seems to have forgotten to ruthlessly weed out bugs in the game. This is an amazing game, full of side-quests and chances to choose your outcome in many ways, just like the last game. The area is vulnerable to trampling by livestock and off-road vehicles (effects from human intervention are greater in the eastern Gobi Desert, where rainfall is heavier and may sustain livestock). Several large nature reserves have been established in the Gobi, including Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, Great Gobi A and Great Gobi B Strictly Protected Area. Due to livestock grazing, the amount of shrubs in the desert has decreased. These shrubs included gray sparrow's saltwort ( Salsola passerina), gray sagebrush, and low grasses such as needle grass and bridlegrass. The most common vegetation in the Gobi desert are shrubs adapted to drought. Lizards are especially well-adapted to the climate of the Gobi Desert, with approximately 30 species distributed across its southern Mongolian border. They are occasionally visited by snow leopards, Gobi bears, and wolves. ĭespite the harsh conditions, these deserts and the surrounding regions sustain many animals species, some are even unique, including black-tailed gazelles, marbled polecats, wild Bactrian camels, Mongolian wild ass and sandplovers. Īrcheologists and paleontologists have done excavations in the Nemegt Basin in the northwestern part of the Gobi Desert (in Mongolia), which is noted for its fossil treasures, including early mammals, dinosaur eggs, and prehistoric stone implements, some 100,000 years old. The Gobi Desert is the source of many important fossils finds, including the first dinosaur eggs, twenty-six of which, averaging 9 inches (23 cm) in length, were uncovered in 1923. Hence, the icy dust and snowstorms of spring and early summer plus early January (winter).Ĭonservation, ecology, and economy The more northern areas of the Gobi are very cold and dry, making it unable to support much plant growth this cold and dry weather is attributed to Siberian-Mongolian high pressure cells. The southern and central parts of the Gobi Desert have variable plant growth due to this monsoon activity. Īlthough the southeast monsoons reach the southeast parts of the Gobi, the area throughout this region is generally characterized by extreme dryness, especially during the winter, when the Siberian anticyclone is at its strongest. Most of the precipitation falls during the summer. In contrast, in Alxa, Inner Mongolia, it rises as high as 37 ☌ (99 ☏) in July.Īverage winter minimums are a frigid −21 ☌ (−6 ☏), while summertime maximums are a warm 27 ☌ (81 ☏). In southern Mongolia, the temperature has been recorded as low as −32.8 ☌ (−27.0 ☏). However, the climate of the Gobi is one of great extremes, with rapid changes of temperature of as much as 35 ☌ (63 ☏) in 24 hour spans. These winds may cause the Gobi to reach −40 ☌ (−40 ☏) in winter to 45 ☌ (113 ☏) in summer. Additional moisture reaches parts of the Gobi in winter as snow is blown by the wind from the Siberian Steppes. An average of about 194 mm (7.6 in) of rain falls annually in the Gobi. Besides being quite far north, it is also located on a plateau roughly 910–1,520 m (2,990–4,990 ft) above sea level, which contributes to its low temperatures. The Gobi is overall a cold desert, with frost and occasionally snow occurring on its dunes. Remains of the Great Wall of China in the Gobi Desert Much of the Gobi is not sandy, instead resembling exposed bare rock. Some geographers and ecologists prefer to regard the western area of the Gobi region (as defined above): the basin of the Tarim in Xinjiang and the desert basin of Lop Nor and Hami ( Kumul), as forming a separate and independent desert, called the Taklamakan Desert. Ī relatively large area on the east side of the Greater Khingan range, between the upper waters of the Songhua (Sungari) and the upper waters of the Liao-ho, is reckoned to belong to the Gobi by conventional usage. In its broadest definition, the Gobi includes the long stretch of desert extending from the foot of the Pamirs (77° east) to the Greater Khingan Mountains, 116–118° east, on the border of Manchuria and from the foothills of the Altay, Sayan, and Yablonoi mountain ranges on the north to the Kunlun, Altyn-Tagh, and Qilian mountain ranges, which form the northern edges of the Tibetan Plateau, on the south. In 2007, it occupied an arc of land in area. The desert is widest in the west, along the line joining the Lake Bosten and the Lop Nor (87°–89° east). The Gobi measures 1,600 km (1,000 mi) from southwest to northeast and 800 km (500 mi) from north to south. The Gobi Desert ( Chinese: 戈壁 (沙漠), Mongolian: Говь (ᠭᠣᠪᠢ)) ( / ˈ ɡ oʊ b i/) is a large desert or brushland region in East Asia, and is the sixth largest desert in the world.
